Services for Children

SureStart Shantallow aims to provide high-quality experiences of care and education for children under the age of 4. We work in partnership with parents and relevant professionals to provide children with environments which are safe, challenging, stimulating and incorporate a holistic approach to learning. Our qualified, committed and enthusiastic Early Years Team apply the Highscope approach to early learning, identifying and building on children’s strengths, interests and abilities. The Highscope approach invites children to be actively involved in play throughout the session. We provide a range of Early Years Services in a variety of settings within the community:

Shantallow Family Centre Crèche

Accommodates 8 children aged between 6 months to 2 ½ years (approx) at any one time. Children may be allocated 2 sessions in the morning 10 am to 12 noon or afternoon 1.45 to 3.45.

Shantallow Family Centre Playgroup

Caters for 12 children at any one time aged 2 years 2 months years to 3 years 11 month (approx). Children will be allocated 2 morning sessions, which operate from 10 am until 12 noon.

Galliagh Park Crèche

Accommodates 6 children at any one time aged 6 months to 2 ½ years (approx). Galliagh Park Crèche operates 4 afternoons and 2 mornings per week. Children are allocated 2x2 hours sessions per week

Twinkle Tots

Provides sessional care for groups Monday to Thursday morning from 10 to 12 noon, it accommodates 12 children at any one time aged between 6 months to 3 years 11 months.

Chatter Crèche

Operates on a Thursday morning and caters only for the children who attend Talking Tots Programme. During this session the staff members support children to develop speech and language and attention and skills.

SureStart Developmental Programme for 2-3 Year Olds

The Developmental Programme for 2-3 Year Olds offers a play-based approach to support the child’s development and understanding of the world around them. It was developed to ensure children can access an age-appropriate environment in the year before they are due to attend pre-school.

The programme consists of 3 x 2 ½ hours sessions weekly, with an additional parental involvement session. Operating from September until the end of June the programme caters for a maximum of 12 children in each group and is delivered by 3 qualified staff –1 Leader and 2 Assistants, who must complete training specific to working with 2 -3 year olds.

Surestart Shantallow operates 6 programmes:

  • First Friends, St Therese P.S, Lenamore (2 programmes)
  • Shantallow Family Centre
  • Naiscoil Colmcille (Irish Medium)
  • Steelstown Primary School (2 programmes)

To be considered:

  • You must be registered with SureStart Shantallow
  • and live within Shantallow SureStart's geographical area
  • and your child must be 2 years old on or before July 1 in the year of entry.

In addition to this we operate admissions criteria as directed by the Department of Education.

Parents complete an Expression of Interest form and once registered with SureStart Shantallow will be notified of place availability through the SureStart Newsletter.
